Die horizontüberflutende, undurchdringliche Weite des Amazonas-Regenwaldes und die Nähe gebende, lokal zugängliche Welle eines Freien Radiosenders, wissenschaftliche Erkenntnis und überliefertes Wissen, Globales und Regionales – Barbara Marcels künstlerische Arbeit ist ein Versuch, für das komplexe Zusammenspiel der Lebensprozesse im Amazonas-Gebiet zu sensibilisieren.
Der Amazonas-Regenwald ist von globaler Bedeutung: Er produziert einen Großteil des Sauerstoffs unseres Planeten, filtert und verarbeitet das schädliche Kohlendioxid der Welt, beeinflusst den Wasserkreislauf, der wiederum auf die Ozeanzyklen einwirkt, und stabilisiert das Klima. Der mitten im Amazonas-Regenwald gelegene Amazonas Tall Tower (ATTO) hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die Wechselwirkungen zwischen dem Wald, den Böden und der Atmosphäre der Region zu untersuchen, um die Rolle des Amazonasbeckens für das Erdsystem zu verstehen. Der Turm ist Teil einer internationalen Zusammenarbeit zwischen Brasilien und Deutschland, gebaut und finanziert von dem Amazonas-Forschungs- und Max-Planck-Institut INPA.
In dem künstlerischen Projekt »Ciné-Cipó – Cine-Liana« (2020) schlägt die brasilianische Künstlerin Barbara Marcel eine temporäre Umwandlung des Turms vor: Er wird zum Arbeitsort Freien Radios, gemeinsam bespielt von NaturwissenschaftlerInnen, zwei lokalen AktivistInnen und populären KommunikatorInnen des Reserva Extrativista (kurz: Resex) Tapajós-Arapiuns. Die wissenschaftlichen Ergebnisse und das traditionelle Wissen werden in Beziehung gesetzt und bilden eine Allianz zur Verteidigung der Artenvielfalt im Amazonasgebiet. Atmosphärische und irdische Daten werden mittels einer Radiosendung mit Spots, Interviews und Liedern verständlich und ansprechend kommuniziert. Dabei überschneiden oder trennen sich manchmal wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse und das Wissen der Vorfahren, auch erfahren die ZuhörerInnen einiges über die Kämpfe zur Verteidigung der Gebiete und der lokalen Lebensgrundlagen der Amazonasbevölkerung, wodurch universalisierende Annahmen entmystifiziert werden.

Barbara Marcel (*1985, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilien) hat an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, am Institut für Kunst im Kontext der Universität der Künste in Berlin und an der Universidade Estácio de Sá in Rio de Janeiro studiert. Ihre Arbeiten wurden u.a. im ZKM, Karlsruhe; nGbK, Berlin; Savvy Contemporary Berlin; Espacio Pla, Buenos Aires; Tieranatomisches Theater, Humboldt Universität Berlin; Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin; CeNak – Zoologisches Museum Hamburg; Athens Biennale und Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst, Leipzig gezeigt. Sie ist Stipendiatin der Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung und lebt seit 2009 in Berlin.

The impenetrable expanse of the Amazon rainforest and the proximity of locally accessible airwaves of a community radio station, scientific knowledge and traditional knowledge, global and regional processes – Barbara Marcel’s artistic work is an attempt to sensitize people to the complex interaction of life processes in the Amazon region.
The Amazon rainforest is of global significance: it produces a large part of the planet’s oxygen, filters and reprocesses the world´s harmful carbon dioxide, impacts the water cycle affecting ocean cycles and stabilize the climate. Located in the middle of the Amazon rainforest the Amazon Tall Tower (ATTO) aims to study the interactions between the forest, soils and atmosphere of the region in order to understand the role of the Amazon basin for the Earth system. The tower is part of an international cooperation between Brazil and Germany, built and financed by INPA (Amazon Research Institute) and Max-Planck Institute.
In the artistic project »Ciné-Cipó – Cine-Liana« (2020) the Brazilian artist Barbara Marcel proposes a temporary transformation of the tower into a community radio workspace for a collaborative piece between natural scientists and two local activists and popular communicators of the Tapajós-Arapiuns river Extractive Reserve (Reserva Extrativista/ Resex Tapajós-Arapiuns). The scientific results and traditional knowledges are set in relation, forming an alliance for the defense of the Amazonian biodiversity. Atmospheric and earthly data are translated into popular communication via a radio show with spots, interviews and songs. During the process, scientific evidence and ancestral knowledges sometimes intersect and occasionally disconnect, while the scientific community listens and also learns more about the struggles in defence of the territories and local livelihoods of the Amazonian populations, demystifying universalizing assumptions.
